Giant Steps Coal River Pinot Noir 2024
The fruit comes from the Nocton Vineyard, planted in 1999 on calcareous sandstone soils just inland from Hobart. Longer daylight hours and the cool maritime climate shape Pinot Noir with density, structure and an unmistakable savoury line.
The 2024 harvest was hand-picked in the early morning and transported across Bass Strait to preserve freshness. In the cellar, a mix of whole-bunch and destemmed fruit was fermented before spending eight months in French oak (25% new). The result is a wine that speaks differently to Yarra Valley Pinot—more muscular and deeply fruited, yet still defined by clarity and restraint.
Coal River Pinot Noir is the outlier in the Giant Steps range: rich in dark cherry, cola spice and ferrous earth, framed by fine, long tannins and a cool-climate backbone. It’s a wine of presence and longevity, offering a complementary southern voice to the winery’s Yarra classics.
