Von Buhl Estate Riesling Dry 2016

First introduced in 2013, this village-level Riesling aims to reflect the village of Forst in general. Depending on the vintage, the wine is based on declassified fruit from one or more of the Estate’s Grosse Lage (great growth) vineyards. The 2014 was predominantly young vine Pechstein, while the 2015 was sourced from the Ungeheuer. This year, the blend is made up of fruit from Ungeheuer, Pechstein and Jesuitengarten. All great names! The basalt rich soils and the low yields of these sites have generated a cuvée with far more structure, texture and mineral intensity than the popular entry-level Riesling QbA. Fermented in large dopplestücks (wooden casks) and stainless steel, with seven months on full lees, the quality here showcases the wine’s Grosse Lage origins with incredible finesse and class. Expect a textural Riesling tsunami of citrus pith, chamomile and saline notes and a long, vibrant, mineral close. An undeniable bargain.

Region:

Cellaring:

Enjoy now to 5 years

Nose:

The citrus/golden-colored Riesling is dense, clear and aromatic on the nose and shows flinty aromas along with ripe Riesling flavors.

Palate:

Very vital and pure on the palate, the wine reveals a great grip and tension. Its power comes from the depth, not from the alcohol. The finish is long, complex and very salty, revealing a pure, concentrated and firmly-structured baby Riesling. This has great expression and talents. The finish and aftertaste reveal some refreshing white and lemony aromas; it does not have the rich and opulent stone fruit flavor you often find in Pfalz, as well as in Forst Rieslings. The finish is long, pure, salty and enormously vital.
