Kay Brothers Basket Mataro
Mataro is located on the lower slopes of the Amery vineyard in Block 1 & 2. Nestled close to the creek, alluvial chocolate loamy soil lies over complex geology containing weathered calcareous sandstone and siltstone.
Mataro has over a century of history in McLaren Vale, and was first planted in the Amery Hillside vineyard in 1892.
It sits somewhere between a grenache and a shiraz in terms of weight, and is known for its ripe dark fruit flavours and savoury, earthy undercurrents.
Pair it with a simple tapas spread of olives, anchovies and cured meats or drink it with pasta with a tomato-based sauce. It works very well with spices like paprika and chilli, and with smoky flavours.
