Penfolds Max's Shiraz Cabernet

Penfolds Max’s Shiraz Cabernet is a tribute to former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert 1948-1975, a legend in Penfolds history. This inaugural release honours Max in the year he would have turned 100 years old (February 9, 2015) were he still with Penfolds today.

Max’s constant pursuit of excellence paved the way for those who followed in his footsteps and also allowed the status and heritage of Penfolds Winery to grow. A more approachable Penfolds style at release – ideally shelf to glass; save the cellar.

Additional details
Cellaring:
Enjoy now 3-5 years.
Foods:
Slow cooked Lamb Shanks.
Oak:
12 months in American oak (5% new) with the balance in seasoned American and French oak hogsheads
Nose:
At first, a varietal fusion of anise, fennel, fig and cola. And then, a release of red liquorice, rhubarb, quince. Oak does not protrude, yet some nutty characters (almond, nut husk) remind of its role. Fruit and nut chocolate teased from an amalgam of other ethereal exotica.
Palate:
Medium-bodied, balanced. Red fruits (raspberry/strawberry) and a leafy suggestion of Cabernet confirmed by an unabashed blackcurrant appearance on this palate’s stage. Softened grainy tannins and a deft suggestion of oak structurally underpin this same palate platform. Shiraz and Cabernet – all gaps filled.
Varietal Composition:
Shiraz (76%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%)
